Shaun Kinley
Cleveland, Ohio
Shaun Kinley (b. 1969) is a Cleveland-based painter whose work explores the energy held within people, places, and shared cultural experiences. For more than thirty years, he has drawn upon subjects ranging from city architecture and civic landmarks to athletic competition and moments of collective memory. Working from observation, Kinley moves beyond literal representation to capture how a subject feels: its momentum, atmosphere, emotional intensity, and presence.
Kinley describes his approach as expressive maximalism. He builds his paintings through loose, varied strokes of high-contrast acrylic color layered over dimensional texture. Multiple colors are often loaded onto a single brush or palette knife, allowing them to meet and blend organically as they move across the surface. Broken and inferred lines leave space for perception and imagination, while strong complementary colors heighten the sensation of movement, light, and energy.
His work is particularly drawn to subjects charged with collective experience—the architecture through which a city understands itself, the heightened action of athletic competition, and the people or events that become part of a community’s shared visual memory. Whether depicting a familiar landmark or a moment unfolding at full speed, Kinley is less interested in exact replication than in intensifying the experience of seeing it. His paintings are influenced by the color and immediacy of the Impressionists and Expressionists, the physicality of George Bellows, and the instinctive freedom of artists who worked beyond established expectations.
Kinley has produced commissioned and collected work for cultural institutions, healthcare organizations, corporations, charitable foundations, professional athletes, and private collectors. His painting Peace by Peace, depicting the Oslo Peace Treaty, was presented to President William J. Clinton in the Oval Office and is held by the Clinton Presidential Library; a reproduction was later exhibited at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Other works have been commissioned or acquired by University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic, The Ohio State University, RUDIS, Stark Enterprises and National City Bank. His paintings have also appeared in the feature film Draft Day and soon the Hulu series The Land.
Kinley holds a bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University, where he competed as a varsity wrestler, and a master’s degree from Notre Dame College. Alongside his studio practice, he teaches visual art and coaches wrestling at St. Edward High School. These parallel experiences—as artist, athlete, coach, and educator—continue to inform his understanding of discipline, movement, perception, and the expressive possibilities of human effort.
